Garfield served in the Australian Army during the Second World War. He enlisted in Wayville South Australia on 1 March 1943. He was discharged with the rank of Lance Sergeant with a posting in the 'S A L OF C PROVOST COY' on 4 March 1946.^[3]

Garfield died in South Australia on 22 November 1988 at the age of 78 years.^[4]

Garfield was buried at the Centennial Park Cemetery in Pasadena, South Australia on 25 November 1988.^[5][6]
