Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Henry Dawkes Sr. was a Virginia colonist.

Dawkes, Henry, an ancient planter, came to Virginia in 1608, and in 1632 his "son and heir apparent," William Dawkes of Varina, patented lands due him for the personal adventure of his father, and for a subscription to the stock of the London Company, paid by his father. [1][2]

Henry and Mary Dyke"Dawkes", (brother & sister) each invested 25 pds and came on the ship, "2nd Supply" arriving in Jamestown in October 1608.

Immigration: Henry Dawkes, arrival 1608, Virginia.[3]

1609 Charter lists a Henry Dawkes: https://avalon.law.yale.edu/17th_century/va02.asp

Mary married William Leigh, of Leigh High, Cheshire, as soon as she arrived in Virginia. There were earlier Dyke/Leigh marriages in Cheshire. Richard Dyke (Daux) was Captain of Foot in London and he sent his son, Walter "Daux" to Virginia.

In 1608, Henry Dawkes & his brother-in-law William Leigh, both of London, took a bill of adventure from London Company, & settled at Varina in 1632, which was for a long period the county seat of Henrico County.[4]

Henry "Dawkes" received the first patent of land in present Henrico Co., Virginia, on Two Mile Creek, NW of the James River, south of Powhattan's Tree. It was 250 acres in a neck of land commonly called the Verinas. abutting easterly upon a creek known as two mile Creek, and thence extending westerly towards the land of Thomas Parker.

His son, Henry Jr., born in 1602, came to Charles City County, Va. in 1635, age 33, after the death of his father. Henry Jr. went to York County, the area that became St. Peters Parish, New Kent Co., Virginia.

Parentage

Thomas Dykes (Dykes-8) has been removed as his father. Mary Gray Radcliffe (Radcliffe-106) has been removed as his mother. There seems to be no evidence of a connection.

A more likely candidate for his father would be Edward Dawkes of London who had a son Henry Dawkes (birth and baptism in 1579): https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NLFP-S9B

Unfortunately I could not find a daughter Mary for Edward Dawkes, just the following children (although Anne would be right age if her name was Mary Anne):

Thomazine Dawkes Birth 11 June 1580 St Mildred Poultry with St Mary Colechurch, London, England, United Kingdom FatherEdward Dawkes

Edward Dawkes Birth 12 August 1584 Christening 16 August 1584 St Mildred Poultry with St Mary Colechurch, London, England, United Kingdom FatherEdward Dawkes

Henry Dawkes Birth 28 July 1579 Christening 7 August 1579 St Mildred Poultry with St Mary Colechurch, London, England, United Kingdom FatherEdward Dawkes

Anne Dawkes Birth 29 March 1583 Christening 31 March 1583 St Mildred Poultry with St Mary Colechurch, London, England, United Kingdom FatherEdward Dawkes

Thomas Dawkes Birth 20 November 1585 Christening 28 November 1585 St Mildred Poultry with St Mary Colechurch, London, England, United Kingdom FatherEdwad. Dawkes

There are few baptism in the period 1589-93 for some Dawes children of an Edward Dawes, goldsmith, including one for a Marie/Mary in 1589, but they are in a different (City of) London parish than the Dawkes records of St Mildred Poultry w. St Mary Colechurch, namely St. Mary Somerset w. St. Mary Mounthaw, so not sure if relevant tp your Dawkes profiles or not.

The following source indicates Henry Dawkes Sr. did not die in 1637. He died before 17 September 1632: https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/48438/images/VALandRecords-003407-522?pId=346035

Why would the name come form Dykes then change to Dawkes and back to Dykes: perhaos the name sare disctonct and not variations: see e.g. baptism of a Henry Dawkes 1579 London <ref>"England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NLFP-S9B : 19 September 2020), Henry Dawkes, 1579.</ref>

Thank you. I have created a new "Parentage" section noting that the doubtful parents have been removed. And also noted that Edward Dawkes of London (son Henry born in 1579) was a likely candidate. Henry born in 1579 would certainly be the right age to have a son Henry in 1602, and the place (London) also fits.

The patent that William Dawkes applied for in 1632 was for 250 acres and represented his father Henry's share and his uncle William Leigh's share didn't it? Is there a source for the death date of Henry Dawkes Sr? Thanks, Mary

I just posted a comment above and have changed the death date for Henry and gave the source showing that he was deceased by 17 September 1632.

Thanks Kenneth for the work done on this profile. I moved the unmerged match to a rejected match, as Henry and William are clearly different people.

detached profile for Sarah Newman-7955 is attached as wife to profile of William Dykes-545 (1585-1659)
posted by Liz (Noland) Shifflett
Dykes-984 and Dykes-545 are not ready to be merged because: It is not clear whether Henry and William could be duplicates of the same man. Henry has a different death date, and he is usually said to have died in Virginia (not Sussex, England). This requires more research.

In any case, I have removed Sarah Newman as wife of Henry, because her marriage record clearly says she married William.

There is a possibility that Henry Dykes is a brother of Thomas Dykes (Dykes-592). However, this is presumed only because they were both alive at about the same time (so could be siblings) and lived in the same part of England (Kent/Sussex border area).
