Biography

John was the second son of John Darcy, 5th Lord Darcy of Knaith and 4th Lord Meinell, and Margaret Grey.[1] His proof of age indicates that he was baptised on 13 November (the feast day of St Brice/Bricius) at Temple Hirst, Yorkshire.[2] Inquisitions Post Mortem for his older brother Phillip Darcy, 6th Lord Darcy of Knaith, suggest that he was likely to have been born in about 1404,[3][4] the year suggested by Douglas Richardson.[1] (See Research Notes.)

He married Joan Greystoke, daughter of John Greystoke, 4th Lord Greystoke, and Elizabeth Ferrars, eldest daughter and co-heiress of Robert Ferrers, 2nd Lord Ferrers of Wem.[1][5][6][7] They married, probably about 1424, without a license because Darcy had not yet reached his majority, and he did not receive a pardon for this offense until October, 1427, when he paid 200 marks to obtain it.[8][9][10] There were at least eight children from this marriage:

John Darcy died in 1454[1] and was succeeded by his grandson, Sir William Darcy.[8] His widow married (second) William Stoke, Knt., by dispensation dated 27 April 1458,[14] and was still living in 1471/2.[1]

Research Notes

Birth Year

On 15 January 1428 there was a proof of age for John which gave his age as 21 and more,[2] suggesting a possible birth year of about 1407. Inquisitions Post Mortem for John's brother Philip (who died on 2 August 1418) found John to be his next heir male (though Philip's two daughters were his direct heirs), and several give his age on the date of the Inquisitions. They point to a birth date of probably about 1404:

  • An IPM held at Calais on 20 August 1419 says he was then age 14 and more.[3]
  • IPMs held at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland on 21 September 1419 and at Thirsk, Yorkshire on 3 October 1419[4] say he was then age 15 and more.[3]
  • An IPM held at Gainsborough, Lincolnshire on 17 October 1420 says he was then age [16] and more: the age is square-bracketed, indicating uncertainty (possibly because of difficulty in deciphering the original record), in the transcript on the Mapping-the-Medieval-Countryside website).[3]
