Harry Daniels was born in 1916 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was the son of Harry Daniels and Mae Garrett. He grew up in Indianapolis, having attended Indiana University from 1940 - 1941 and was employed by General Motors company in Indianapolis. He entered the Tuskegee Institute and trained to be a fighter pilot, completing his basic flight training in July of 1943. [1].
Harry was assigned to the 301st Fighter Squadron, 322nd Fighter Group, based at Montecorvino Air Base in Italy. On Feb 24, 1944, he was participating in a training mission around Mt. Vesuvius when his plane went missing in the clouds[2]. He was the first 332nd FG pilot to have been reported to have been killed overseas. [3]His body was never recovered. Although his MIA Date is Feb 24, 1944, he wasn't officially declared dead until May 18, 1945. His name is memorialized on the tablets of the missing at Sicily-Rome American Cemetery.
