Biography

John Dane was born at Ipswich, Massachusettson November 29, 1681, son of John and Abigail (Warner) Dane. [1] [2]

He married Martha (___) by about 1715 [2] [3], as their son John was baptized in April, 1716. [1]

John died intestate and on August 1, 1745, his widow Martha refused the administration of his estate. [3]

His widow Martha does not appear on any further probate record, indicating that she either died, or possibly remarried by 1755, when the administration was granted to son John.

  • 1755: June 23: John Dane, Samuel Brown Jr. and Jacob Brown 3rd, posted L1000, for the administration of the estate of John Dane of Ipswich, deceased, by his son John [3]
  • On the same date, Samuel Brown Jr., Jacob Brown Jr., and Jacob Brown 3rd were ordered to take an inventory of the estate of John Dane [3]

In addition to household goods, furniture and clothing, his estate included a bible and other books, a pair of seals and weights, a cart, 2 plows, draft chains, sheep shears, hay forks and other implements of farming and livestock. [3]

His estate was valued at L775 5s 2d with real estate holdings of a dwelling house, stone house and 98 acres of adjoining land valued at L457 6s 8d and 8 other land parcels. [3]

  • 1757: June 3: The court appointed a committee to set out a division of John's real estate among the children, without prejudice. [3]
  • 1758: October 28: The committee submitted a real estate assessment including two dwelling houses, one barn and 140 acres of land with a value of L584 and the specific boundaries for 2 divisions. The court then ordered the divisions of the real estate, and payments to siblings from the divisions. [3]
  • 1759: January 22: William, John and Daniel Dane, yeomen, all of Ipswich paid L1000 bond in the administration of the estate of John Dane of Ipswich, deceased. They noted that the real estate could no be divided into more than parcels without prejudice. [3]
  • Division One went to son John with the following obligations: [3]
to his sister Sarah Wheeler, L83 8s 7d
to the children of his brother Benjamin, deceased, L83 8s 7d
  • Division Two to William Dane, with the following obligations [3]
to his sister Elizabeth Knowlton, L83 8s 7d
to his sister Abigail Dodge, L83 8s 7d
