Biography

Harald Dahl was born in Sarpsborg 4 Dec 1863 and christened 26 Jun 1864^[1] (after his parents had married 20 Jun 1864)

1901 Census on the 31st March 1901 Harald, a shipbroker's manager, was lodging at 3 Charles Place, Barry, Glamorganshire, Wales.^[2][3]

First marriage

Harald met Marie Beaurin-Gressier sometime in the 1890s while he was living in Paris. Harald moved to Wales by 1897, but having fallen in love with her he returned in the summer of 1901 and they were married. Marie was "a glamorous doe-eyed Parisian beauty," she was "waiflike, elfin and delicate" - although Harald was 15 years older, a photograph of her "beaming with delight" on their wedding day "suggests she was very much in love."^[4]

1911 Census on the 2nd April 1911 Harald, a widow and a shipbroker, was living in Fairwater Road, Llandaff, Cardiff, Glamorganshire, Wales with his children Ellen Marguerite and Louis (children from his first marriage to Marie Beaurin-Gressier).^[5]

Second marriage

Harald's first wife Marie Beaurin-Gressier died in 1907 and it is thought that Harald married Sofie Magdalene (Hesselberg) in 1911, and their eldest child Astri was born in 1912 in Cardiff, Wales.^[6]

At the time of his daughter Else's christening in 1918 Harald was living at Villa Marie, Llandaff, Cardiff with his wife Sofie.^[7]

Harald died on the 11th April 1920 and had been living at Ty Mynydd, Radyr, Cardiff, Glamorganshire, Wales. He was buried at St. John, Radyr, Glamorganshire. His estate of £158,917 10sh. was subject to probate in Llandaff, Cardiff on the 20th May 1920 to his second wife Sofie Magdalene (Hesselberg) Dahl and his half-brother Oscar Dahl, shipowner.^[8][9]
