Biography
Elizabeth was born around 1794 in Maryland, daughter of William Henry Culver. [1] She married Francis Valdenar in 1821 in Montgomery County, Maryland. Elizabeth had a sister, Rebecca, who was declared mentally incompetent. Elizabeth's husband Francis Valdenar became Rebecca's trustee and managed her "property", which essentially consisted of one female slave, Amelia Edmonson, and her 14 or so children. Six of the Edmonson children were were involved in an attempted slavery escape that became known as the "Pearl Incident", and Francis was heavily involved both before and after in the outcome of the escapees. Elizabeth and Francis lived together into their late 70's and possibly 80's before Elizabeth died sometime between 1870 and 1880, when Francis is listed as a widower.
