Biography

William Henry was a land owner in Montgomery County, Maryland. At his death in 1826, he willed some slaves he owned to his daughter Rebecca. Since Rebecca was considered mentally unfit, her brother-in-law Francis Valdenar was trustee for her. William Henry had at least the following children: Rebecca, Elizabeth (m. Valdenar), and Henry. He had a sister Drusilla who cared for his daughter Rebecca in her later years.

  • [Maryland State Archives biography on Francis Valdenar Excerpt: Valdenar married Elizabeth Culver (b.1794), daughter of William Henry Culver, March 28, 1821...Francis Valdenar then purchased land in 1836, from his brother in law Henry Culver who lived in Prince George's County.....Francis Valdenar was the trustee of Rebecca Culver who is described in records as a lunatic. Valdenar's wife Elizabeth was the sister of Rebecca Culver, who owned members of the Edmonson family, six of whom would have made the attempted escape on the Pearl in Washington, DC.
  • Biography of Rebecca Culver, Maryland State Archives, Excerpt: Rebecca Culver was born about 1785 in Montgomery County, MD, the daughter of Henry Culver and an unknown mother. When Henry Culver died he willed to his daughter Rebecca a slave woman Amelia and all of her increase, which included fifteen children. Rebecca Culver was diagnosed as a lunatic and therefore mentally incapable of taking on the task of complete ownership.... Francis Valdenar, Rebecca's brother in law, was appointed trustee to Culver's estate. He made all the decisions in regards to Culvers' estate, which included her slaves....By 1850, Rebecca Culver had no slaves in her possession and was worthless to Francis Valdenar. She was placed in the care of Michael and Drusilla Connelly, who was the sister of Rebecca's father, Henry Culver.
