Biography

Julia was born about January 8, 1868 in Nevada [1] to Alfred McDowell Crow and Martha Hicks.

At the time of the 1870 Census she was 2 years old, living in Stockton, California with her parents and older siblings. According to the Census she was born in Nevada. Her father was employed as a lumber merchant.[2]

In 1880, Julia, 12 years old, is living with her parents and siblings at Orestimba (Crow's Landing), California. Her father, A M, is shown as working as a farmer. There are a number of other Crow families on the Census page.[3]

On August 10, 1892 at Napa, California, Julia Dayton Crow married Henry Whittingham Coates. Henry, age 33, was born about 1859 in England. Julia was 24 years old and born in Nevada. It was a first marriage for both. Witnesses were Margaret W Thompson and Robert Parker Landin.[4] The couple soon moved to England. They are shown leaving New York and arriving at Liverpool on the ship Servia on September 12, 1892.[5]

In 1901 Henry and Julia Coates were living on Hart Street at Henley in Oxfordshire, England. Henry was working as a draper. The couple had two sons, Barrett N age 7 and Kenneth H age 2. Julia's mother, Martha Crow, was living with them. She was a widow and 63 years old. The couple also had a number of boarders/workers residing with them As they are all identified as dressmakers/milliners it is probable that they worked for Henry.[6]

By 1906, Henry and Julia had returned to the United States and in 1910 are shown living on Slagas Avenue at Burnett in Santa Clara, California. They now had three sons; Barrett, 16; Kenneth, 11 and Clarence, 8. Henry was working a fruit farm.[7]

In 1920, Julia, now widowed, is living with her youngest son, Clarence. Their residence is on Carleton Street in Berkley, California. No indication of income is identified on the Census.[8] She is also in Berkeley, on Los Angeles Avenue, in the 1930 Census, but she is living on her own. The value of her home, which she owned, was $8500. [9]

By 1935 she had moved to a residence on Euclid Street in Oakland where she boarded with a widow for $33/month. She is enumerated there in the 1940 Census. [10]

She died on July 13, 1947 in Alameda, California. [1]
