Biography

Barrett Nelson Coates was born on February 5, 1896 in Henley-on-Thames, England. He lived with his family in Henley ^[1] until they immigrated to the United States in 1906. Their ship, the Carmania, left Liverpool on January 27, 1906 and arrived in New York at Ellis Island on February 4, 1906. The ship's manifest states that they would be joining Mrs. Henry Coates in Morgan Hill, California. ^[2]

In 1910, the family was living in Burnett, California, a town in Santa Clara County. ^[3]

Barrett registered for the 1917-1918 draft on June 5th. He was single, living in Berkeley, California, and working as an actuary for the State of California. He claimed exemption from the draft on the grounds that he was a state employee. Physically, he is described as medium in height, slender build, with blue eyes and red hair. ^[4]

He lived in Berkeley at least through 1940. He married Evangeline Coombs and they had three children: the twins Barrett Jr. and Kenneth, and a daughter Carol. ^{[5] [6]}

In 1963 Barrett traveled to Brazil, his tourist card has a picture of him as well as birthdate and the names of his parents. ^[7]

Barrett died on September 16, 1976 in Alameda County, California. ^[8]
