Bessie was born on the 24th June 1866, in Bowen, Queensland, Australia, the eldest child and eldest daughter of Thomas Crewe and Sarah Taylor.[1]
Bessie's date of birth was difficult to track down, as she does not appear on the list of passengers on the Rockhampton from Liverpool, England to Keppel Bay, North Queensland in 1863, nor is there a birth registration found for her in Queensland. There is likewise no record of her in NSW, which would be unlikely anyway as there would have been no time for the parents to land in Rockhampton and also be in NSW in the given time-frame. If she had arrived with her parents on the ship from England, she'd have been older than four years in 1870.
Bessie married Thomas Newton, the brother of her sister's husband, on the 19th of December 1884, in Queensland.[2]
Bessie and Thomas had four sons and three daughters before Thomas died in July of 1898, leaving Bessie with a nine-month old, a two-year old, a four-year old, a seven-year old, a nine-year old, an eleven-year old and a thirteen-year old.
After Thomas died, the family records show she ran a boarding house (place unknown) and, so the family legend goes, had a child to one of her boarders. This son has two birth registrations, so two birth names, both legally recorded.
Two of Bessie's daughters married brothers, much as Bessie and her sister Emily had married brothers.
Bessie Newton née Crewe died on the 14th September 1925, in Ayr, Queensland, Australia, aged 59 years. [3]
Tracking this woman down is difficult even with the family's records that go beyond what BDM registrations can tell you.
