James was born in Morlana , South Australia on 19 July 1899 to William James Trafford Cowan and Ida Lily May Turner.[1]
James married Mary Rosamond Bowman in North Adelaide, South Australia on 6 October 1927.[2] The following wedding report was published in the South Australian newspaper, The Mail, on 8 October 1927:[3]
THURSDAY'S WEDDING. More than two hundred guests gathered at Christ Church, North Adelaide, on Thursday afternoon, when Miss Mary Rosamund Bowman was married to Mr. James Trafford Cowan. Both the parents of the bride and bridegroom are well known pastoralists. The bride wore white crepe de chine with a hem line of beaten silver embroidery. Brussels lace was the material for both train and veil. She was attended by five bridesmaids, whose frocks were in early Victorian mode and made a charming color note of blue in the amber glow of the church. Wedding guests walked from the church to Bishop's Court, where the wedding banquet was served in a huge marquee on the lawn. Sweet peas formed the floral decorative scheme.
James served in the Australian Army during the Second World War. He enlisted in Tailem Bend, South Australia on 5 July 1940. He died in Thailand on 21 July 1943 whilst serving as a prisoner of war. At death, he held the rank of Sergeant in the 2nd/3rd Machine Gun Battalion.[4][5]
