Thomas was born in 1855. He was the son of Adam Cowan and Mary Bell. He passed away in 1863 in Corrie Common, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. His older brother James Cowan's tombstone has a memorial to Thomas as well as his brother Adam, who died in the USA.

The inscription reads as follows:

"Memory of James Cowan late manager of Brandon Co-Operative store who died suddenly May 28th 1878 aged 26 years. Also of Adam who was killed at Houtzdale PA America, Aug 17th 1882 aged 21 years, and Thomas who died at Corrie Common Scotland, March 20th 1863 aged 7 years, sons of Adam and Mary Cowan of New Herrington, so he cometh his beloved sleep."
