Adam was born in 1861 in Corrie Common, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. He was the son of Adam Cowan and Mary Bell. In about 1865 the family moved to Co. Durham, England. The 1881 England Census records that Adam was working as a coal miner and living at 56 Lanton St., West Herrington. Some time after the census he travelled to the USA to Houtzdale, Pennsylvania. While there he was killed on 17th Aug 1882. The circumstances of his death are unknown. The event is recorded in the inscription on James Cowan's gravestone. Houtzdale Pennsylvania is a small town and it once had a mining industry. It is likely that Adam went there to find work in the mining industry.
