Biography

William Ernest Cotterill was born in about 1880 at or about Orange in the Colony of New South Wales in what would later become Australia. He is the son of George Cotterill and his wife Dorothea (nee Browne).

William Ernest Cotterill was listed as a 31 year old horse dealer and driver from Young, New South Wales at the beginning of World War I. In fact Private William Ernest Cotterill enlisted into the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on the 28th of January 1915. His Next of Kin was listed as G T Cotterill of Young, New South Wales. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Reinforcements and this unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A20 Hororata on the 10th of April 1915. Sergeant William Ernest Cotterill would go on to serve with the Australian Motor Transport Section and returned to Australia on the 12th of June 1919.
