Biography

Claude was born about 1730:

Jacques Coste, builder, native of Port Royal, aged 47 years. Married to Françoise Petitpas, native of la Cadie. They have Claude Coste, their son, aged 22 years [1]

By 1752 he was in Port Toulouse with his parents. He must have married shortly after the census as his children were born starting about 1753.

He married Marguerite Vigneau about 1753-1754. Children born before 1761 and after 1771:

  1. Marguerite Coste, b. about 1753-1754
  2. Madeleine Coste, b. about 1756
  3. Jacques James Coste, b. about 1757
  4. Jean-Baptiste Coste, b. after 1771
  5. Pelagie Coste, b. after 1771 [2]

Five of their children were baptized 26 July 1771 in Arichat[3]

  1. Jean b. 15 Nov 1760
  2. Agnès, b. 1 Apr 1764
  3. Julienne, b. 6 June 1765
  4. Félicien, b. 4 Apr 1767
  5. Barbe, b. 27 Jan 1768

... Claude Coste and his wife, Marguerite Vigneau, pioneer settlers of Havre Boucher who were originally from Port Toulouse and were living at Arichat in 1771. The couple moved to Havre Boucher in the late 1780’s, and Claude was one of the settlers who paid a poll tax there in 1794 [4]

He passed away about 1805. [?]

  • We see this date of death on Geneanet, but there is no Claude Coste deceased in 1805 in the Registers of Drouin Genealogical Institute.

Research Notes

The Arichat document says he was originally from POrt Toulouse, but I am not sure about that. When he was in the 1752 census he was 22 years old, with his parents. Not many Acadians had been in Port Toulouse for more than 22 years (since 1730). Plus they did not know their property extent, and had cleared only a garden. Unless he was a significant fisherman, Jacques had not put down much in the way of roots, indicating to me that he had moved there more recently. The census does not give how long they had been in the colony as it does for many other families.
