Biography

RICHARD COOMBS, Early Immigrant from England
Occupation: Tobacco Planter
Property: Coomes Purchase, Port Tobacco, Charles County, Province of Maryland
Religion: Catholic

Richard was born ca 1653/4 according to depositions he gave in Charles county in the early 1700s[1] He has yet to be found in any records with any other Combs other than his own descendants, even though his descendants are found owning land originally owned by Phillip Combes of Charles County (by 1656), and associating with the same families as the Combes of St. Mary's County (descendants of Abraham Combes and Enoch Combes).

In 1676 (Lib 15, fol. 383) Edward COOKE (Mariner), proved rights to 150 acres in Maryland for transporting[2] Richard COOMBS, James BUXTON, and Michael NUTNALL. (Extracted by Combs Researcher Sharon Ray from Sr. Donnally's "Imprints.") to work on CHRISTIAN TEMPLE MANOR, Charles Co., Province of Maryland. We do not know to whom he was indentured. Richard would have been about 22 years old at that time. CHRISTIAN TEMPLE MANOR was originally granted to Thomas ALLANSON (a.k.a. ALLISON) in 1659. See applicable Combs &c. of Charles County reports for more complete records and citations.

Children of Richard Coombs I and Ann are listed as:[3]

1. Jane Combs, b. Aft 1678, St. Mary's County, Maryland
2. Sarah Combs, b. St. Mary's County, Maryland
3. Leonard Combs, b. St. Mary's County, Maryland
4. Eleanor Combs
5. Thomas Combs, b. Abt 1690, Charles County, Maryland d. 27 Jan 1753,
Charles County, Maryland - Probate (Age ~ 63 years)
6. Richard Combs, (undocumented) b. Bef 1698, Charles County, Maryland d. 10 Jan 1751/52, Frederick County, Maryland - Inventory (Age > 54 years)
7. William Combs, b. 1700, Charles County, Maryland d. 27 Sep 1783, Charles County, Maryland - Probate (Age 83 years)
Given the above list of known children of Richard Coombs I (b. 1653 in England d. bef 1747) from "Early Settlers of Sounthern Maryland and Virginia's Northern Neck Counties," two observations can be made:
  • His SON, Thomas Coombs (b. Abt 1690, d. 27 Jan 1753) is the Thomas Coombs who married Elizabeth Wharton!
  • Richard Coombs II (also known as Sr.), perhaps his son (undocumented), was not born until bef. 1698!
The following records[4][5] give detail regarding Richard Coombs I claim to GRENE'S INHERITANCE:</p>

Green's Inheritance was a "2,400 acre tract in Charles County patented by Leonard, Francis and Robert GREEN, three sons of Provincial Governor Thomas GREEN whose widow, Winifred who then married Provincial Surveyor Robert CLARK I by whom had: (1) Thomas CLARKE (m 1st Ann BARBER, d/o Luke, and 2nd Julian MUDD, d/o Thomas and Ann BOARMAN Mudd); (2) Robert CLARKE II (m 1st Sarah COMBS, d/o Abraham of St. Mary's and Charles Counties and 2nd Elizabeth."

The next record[6] offers further evidence regarding this claim:
"Robert and Mary GREENE to Richard COOMBS for sum of 7000 lbs tobacco. [200 acres] GREENE'S INHERITANCE on Portobacco Main branch being formerly surveyed for Leonard, Robert, and Francis GREEN for 2400 ac. and the one third being 800 Leonard GREEN by his last will and testament did bequeath to his four children: Thomas GREEN, Winifred GREEN, Mary GREEN and Margaret GREEN, to each 200 acres, which being divided in four lots and numbers 1-4, the lot number 3 did belong to Mary GREEN now the wife of Francis MARBURY and it begins at a bounded red oak, the second tree of number 2 and runs east 287 per to a bounded hickory, then N 146 per to a bounded red oak and then W 287 per to bounded red oak, and then S to first bounded tree = 200 acres, with dwelling house - wit: John THOMAS, Philip HOSKINS (Richard paid 4 shillings sterling 11 Jan 1703 -- 1703/4 -- for alienation)"
Being unfamiliar with the term of "fine for alienation" in that day and time, I found that it means "A fine on alienation, in feudal law, was a sum of money paid to the lord by a tenant when he had occasion to make over his land to another. It is similar in nature to a relief, a payment made by an heir to the lord to receive his inheritance.[7]

Richard Coomes owned COOMES PURCHASE, and a portion of GREEN'S INHERITANCE. Further proof of this can be found in their son Thomas's Will: Thomas Coombs, son of Richard COOMBS married Elizabeth Wharton. His will was proven January 19, 1753 and mentions son Thomas Wharton, to whom he wills "COOMES PURCHASE"; son Walter, part of "GREENE'S INHERITANCE"; son Bennet, "all my whole and sole right to a part of land called "GREENE'S INHERITANCE". Four younger sons, Joseph, William, Francis, Ignatius, and Walter when they become 18, wife Elizabeth.

In early Maryland records, there seems to be a great deal of confusion about Richard Combs (or other variation of the name) Sr. Richard Combs Jr., Richard Combs I and Richard Combs II.

Records before 1700 are generally attributed to Richard Coombs I. There are some records which some researchers attribute to Richard Coombs Sr. and others to Jr. Then again, some researchers use the term Richard Coombs I and Richard Coombs II.

Questions: Are Richard Coombs I and Richard Coombs Sr. the same person?' Are Richard Coombs I and Richard Coomes II the same person?
1. There appears to have been two distinct early Combs lines in Frederick County: (1) Descendants of Richard COMBS I of Charles Co, MD, and at least one of his probable sons, Richard COMBS II of Prince George's and Frederick Cos, MD, and (2) Joseph COMBS I of the Tonoloways Settlement and his descendants. Complicating research of these two families is the fact that descendants of both Joseph I and Richard II also later resided in Loudoun Co, VA.
2. Richard COMBS, Sr/II was the presumed (undocumented) son of Richard COMBS I of Charles Co, MD, and Richard COMBS, Jr. his son.[8] Therefore Richard COMBS Sr. is the same person as Richard COMBS II. Read that over carefully to get the meaning of that.
3. The birth of Richard Coombs Sr/II is erroneously copied from tree to tree to have been in 1675/6''. That would mean that his son was born the same year he arrived in the colonies. Does that actually seem feasable? He is not recorded married or bringing a child with him on transportation to the colonies where he was to work on the plantation CHRISTIAN TEMPLE MANOR. See Richard Coombs II

Further Records of Evidence In 1696 Richard COOMBS, age 42, was living in Charles County on land called "Christian Temple Manor" on the Mattawomen Creek. [9]

Richard Combs II/Sr. is said to have been born in Charles Co. Maryland in 1675, the presumed (undocumented) son of Richard Coombs I and possibly Ann Shircliffe. [10]

Research Notes

McChesney-105 18:07, 20 July 2016 (EDT)

  • Nomenclature: Richard COMBS Sr. is the same person as Richard COMBS II.
  • Richard Coomes Sr/II could NOT have been born in 1675 in Maryland of Richard Coomes I, as Richard Coomes I did not come to the British American colonies until 1676. He did not bring a child with him.
  • Did Richard Coomes II marry Winnifred "Green"? A majority of family trees on Ancestry.com list Winifred's surname as Greene based on one marriage record.[12] I find no other documents that prove that wife of Richard had surname Green(e).

  2. "…'Immigrated,' means the individual furnished his own transportation to Maryland, while 'transported' means that someone other than the person indexed paid for his passage. Quite often a person 'transported' is also described as a 'servant,' which means that he had contracted to repay the cost of his transportation by agreeing to act as a servant for a period of years. Under certain of the Conditions of Plantation a servant was entitled to claim fifty acres of land upon completing his period of servitude satisfactorily. Such claims are indicated by the word 'service.' "

Not logical that Leonard Greene would have 2 daughters with the same name, just spelled differently-Winifred-Wynefred. Given attitudes abt status, why would he allow

a Winifred Green-high-marry a middle as seen in probate for Rich. Coomes II in Frederick Co. an old chest, some tools, a linen wheel. Green's associated with upper class people-Robt. Green's wife Mary was a Boarman of Chas. Co., a high class family .

Richard II could not have been born 1675 as his father was brought in to Md as indentured servant in 1676. Probably born in the 1680's, closer to dates of his siblings.

Where is info his wife was a Winifred?

Grace, Thank you for the insight. Please feel free to make the appropriate corrections.

In 1703, twenty-seven years after his arrival in Maryland, Richard purchased 200 acres of Green's Inheritance from Robert and Mary GREEN (Land Lib Z-1, fol. 70). He also acquired the tract "Addition" from William GREEN (as repayment of a debt?), and purchased part of the tract, "Christian Temple Manor."

Richard Coomes I and Anne Shircliffe were NOT the parents of Thomas Coomes, husband of Elizabeth Wharton.

Richard Coomes II and Wynyfred Green were the parents of Thomas Coomes.

Profile managers and Grace: my apologies for revising this profile again. I may have goofed it up originally suggesting the merge which I now think should probably not have been acted upon. I know Grace is trying very hard to get this right; my interest stops with the wife Winifred "Green(e)" and a clear bio with good sources and explanations of statements made. (Geni and Ancestry.com really do not qualify as sources. and as Grace has pointed out Rootsweb is questionable.) There are some citations in the Combs source that could be searched. Let's email each other about changes we are thinking about making. Thanks all.
