Biography

Birth

Amelia Jessie Coombe, daughter of William and Maria (Fey) Coombe, was born on 11 May 1858 at Shobhill, Okehampton, Devon, England[1] [2].

Christening

Amelia Jessie Coombe, daughter of William (a Wheelwright) and Maria (Fey) Coombe, of Shobhill, Okehampton was christened at All Saints Church, Okehampton on 4 June 1858.[1].

1861-1871 Censuses

In the 1861 Census Jessey (sic) Coombe, youngest daughter aged 2, is living with her parents William (a 48 year old Wheelwright) and 47 year old Maria at Eastern Town, Okehampton, Devon, England as well as their other children: William (a 19 year old Wheelwright), Grace A. (11), Maria (8), Lucy (6) and Ellen (4). They have a lodger, John Matters, a 77 year old Pauper, who had been born at Bratton Clovelly, Devon.[3].
By the time of the 1871 Census Amelia Jessie Coombe, aged 12, is the only one of the children still living with her parents William (a 57 year old Wheelwright) and 56 year old Maria now at 6, East Street, Okehampton. They have three working lodgers: William Jordan (21) and two Apprentices: John Coombe (16) and Frederick Haydon.[4].

Marriage

20 year old Spinster, Amelia Jessie Coombe, daughter of William Coombe, Carpenter married 23 year old Bachelor, George Slee, a Coachman, (alleged but with no proven link to date) son of Richard Slee, Farmer, at Okehampton Parish Church, Devon on 23 November 1877. Witnesses were William and Jane (?) Coombe [5], see Transcription.

Family

Amelia Jessie and George's children were Florence Millie. Gertrude Jessie. William Coombe. Sidney Walter Coombe. Wilfred Richard. Herbert George. Doris Cadelia Clara Mary and Arthur Reginald John.

1881-1911 Censuses

In the 1881 Census entry for 3, East Street, Okehampton, Devon, England, Amelia J Slee is recorded with her husband, George, a 27 year old Farmer. Their first child, Florence M., now aged 2, had been born at Ilfracombe, Devon.[6].
In the next, 1891 Census, George, aged 37, a Farmer and Grocer, and Amelia, 32, are now at 4, East Street, Okehampton, Devon, England, which is quite possibly the grocer's shop. They have five chidren living with them: Florence Millie (12), Gertrude Jessie (9), William Coombe (7), Sidney W.C. (4) and Wilfred R. (11 months)[7].
Ten years later, the 1901 Census records that Amelia (43) and George, a 47 year old Carrier, are now at Northfield Road, Okehampton, a road off East Street. Their two oldest daughters are no longer at home; they have their six youngest children living with them: William (17, a Mason), Sydney (14, an Errand Boy for a Butchers'), Richard (11), George (8), Dorris (2) and Arthur (11 weeks) [8].
In the 1911 Census, George, aged 60, is a Market Lessee and Greengrocer, probably living over the Shop at 10, East Street, Okehampton; Amelia Jessie, 52, is assisting in the business. Their two oldest sons, William and Sydney, also George, are no longer at home; the three remaining children living with them are: Wilfred Richard (20, a self-employed Confectioner), and Doris (12) and Arthur (10), both still at school [9].

Note

Jessie was a Wyrtleberry Agent for Okehampton. Can anyone explain the significance of this?[10]

Death

Amelia Jessie outlived her husband George Slee by 15 years. She died on 30 August 1947[11], aged 89. Her death was registered at St Austell Registry, Cornwall, England[12].

Burial

Amelia Jessie Slee was buried in All Saints Churchyard, Okehampton which is situated above the town on its western boundary. The headstone on the grave reads, "Peace In Loving Memory of George the beloved husband of Amelia Jessie Slee who entered into rest March 7 1932 aged 81 years - Until the day dawn - Also of Amelia Jessie beloved wife of the above Entered into rest Aug 30th 1947 Aged 89 years She hath done what she could". (This is a Biblical reference to Mark 14:8f (King James Version): "She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying. Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her".)[11].
