James Michael Collier (called Michael or Mike) was born 2 Sept 1949 in Tampa, Florida to Harry Ottis Collier and Mildred Barrett.


By the 1950 census, Michael had just been born in Tampa, Florida.[1]

Michael was the youngest of the family. He was 5 years old when his sister, Carol Collier married. A week after his 6th birthday, his niece was born. Family lore states he told "everyone" she was his birthday present.

Michael enlisted into the U.S. Marine Corp. rather than being drafted during the Vietnam War. He served in Vietnam. In his first 24 hours in county, a young Vietnamese boy threw a grenade at/towards his truck. Michael was Sent to Guam to recuperate where he was offered the opportunity to return home. He refused and returned to Vietnam.[2]

On 27 Jun 1971, at the age of 22, Michael married Brenda Sue Setzer. [3] They had 1 child: Jon Collier. The marriage ended in divorce on 12 Sep 1978. [4]

Michael's second marriage occurred on 23 Mar 1984 (age 35) to Linda Sue Alday in Hillsborough County,Florida.[5] That marriage ended on 3 Aug 1988. [6]

On 12 Jun 1989, at the age of 40, Michael married Mary Lee Franklin in Pinellas County, Florida.[7]

Michael died at age 66 on 20 Apr 2015 in Fort McCoy, Florida.[8]He received a U.S. Veteran's burial at Riverside Memorial Park in Jacksonville, Florida.[9]

Michael was a Marine during the Vietnam War. At this time, the United States was drafting. He decided to choose which arm of the Armed Forces he wanted to serve. Went to Vietnam twice. In his first 24 hours, a young Vietnamese boy threw a grenade at/towards his truck. Sent to Guam to recuperate, he was offered the opportunity to return home, but he refused and returned to Vietnam.

When I was born, he told my mother (his sister) that I was HIS birthday present. He was 6 years old.

The man that returned from Vietnam was not the same boy that joined the Marines. He kept in touch, but, I think, mostly not to go crazy. We were never close again.
