Biography

Jane was born to Col. William Cole and Mary Roscow about 1719 in, Warwick, Virginia.[1] She married three times, being widowed twice, and had children with all three husbands.

Jane’s great grandfather, William Cole, immigrated from England to the Colonies in 1618.

Her father, Col. William Cole, was a prominent politician with a Justice appointment, member of the House of Burgess, Deputy Receiver-General of the Colony, and Sheriff of Warwick Co, Virginia. No doubt she met many prominent politicians and military men in her father’s house.

Jane found herself in the middle of the birth of Independent America through her husbands and children.

She married Col. Nathaniel Claiborne and, of their children, William Claiborne fought with the Virginia Militia[2]. Their son Thomas Claiborne, like his father, served in the House of Burgess[3]. Their daughter, Mary Cole Claiborne, married Roger Gregory, a Magistrate in King William County in 1764, 1766, 1771, and later a member of House of Delegates in 1786[4].

When her husband Nathanial died, Jane remarried to Stephen Bingham. Their one son, Roscoe, served in the Revolutionary War, even though underage. He was killed near Saratoga, NY at 18 years of age[5].

After second husband, Stephen Bingham, died in 1759, Jane married for a third time, this time to Col. Francis West. Francis also served in the House of Burgess from 1748-1758. Their son, William West, received a land grant of 100 acres for his service during the American Revolution[6].

Cole-12499 and Cole-90 appear to represent the same person because: they share the same parents and same husband.
