Biography

The Peerage of Ireland, under Viscount Enniskillen,[1] suggests that William Cole, of London, was a son of Thomas [Cole], of London, and Elizabeth Hargrave, daughter of Thomas Hargrave of London. He appears in the work by the family historian on page 26.[2]

William died on 6 February 1600.[3]

William was buried in Lincoln Cathedral rather than Lancashire. His epitaph (now destroyed) is available here: A Survey of the Cathedrals of York, Durham, Carlisle, Chester, Man, Litchfi... - Google Books

Family

William is said to have married Anne Colles, daughter of Michael Colles of Bradwell, Buckinghamshire.[4] Anne is also said to have died in 1600[5] or 1603, by the family historian, [6]but no date is provided in source.

They had children. The Peerage of Ireland suggests two sons and one daughter.[7]

  • Margaret Cole, the daughter, married Robert Nave of London, a merchant, son of an unnamed Nave of Norfolk, Esq.
  • William Cole. He married Elizabeth Deards, daughter of merchant (a silkman), Nathanael Deards of London. They had children: Arthur; William; Michael; Humphrey; Nathanael; Thomas; and Robert.
  • Thomas Cole. Thomas appears to have studied law and was of the Inner-Temple London, and in 1630 was aged 42 years, thus born 1588, he married Catharine Warnett, daughter of John Warnett of Fransfield in Sussex and had children: Richard (sometimes Reginald), aged 4 years in 1630; Thomas who died young; John aged 1 year in 1630 (he died without children); William, aged 4 months in the same year; and Susan, who died young. Thomas appears on page 28 of the work by the family historian,[8] where two other daughters are noted: another Susan and Anne. Thomas married secondly, 15 May 1651, a daughter, not named in source, of James Preston, of London.[9]

The family historian[10] includes another son:

  • Michael Cole. Oldest son and heir. Stated to be 20 years and 9 months on 16 February 1602[11] and thus born c. May 1581. His younger brother, William. was likely born soon after, and c. 1583. Michael married Margaret Skynner, a daughter of an unnamed Skynner, of Kent. They had an only daughter and heiress, Elizabeth, who married Sir William Wheeler of Westbury.

Cole-625 and Cole 17019 appear to represent the same person. There is very little on this page or that of his wife, but I believe they are the same couple. William Cole who died in 1600/1601 and his wife Anne Colles, or Annee Coilles, who died before her husband in 1598 (according to visitation pedigree chart).

Also Cole15201 Although birth years appear to be estimates, the death year and lack of other info seems to indicate they are meant to be the same person.

This Cole-625 has mostly correct bio information. (Burial is wrong. See my other comment and source.) He is the husband of Anne Colles. He died in 1600. There is another William Cole married to another Anne Colles, however, they are incorrectly listed as the parents of Humphrey Cole. Cole-17019 should be merged into Cole-625, but Humphrey Cole should be disconnected as their son. I have posted comments on Cole-17019; the sources prove this couple did not have a son Humphrey. (Humphrey's bio has some problems that need corrected. There is obvious conflict between his suggested birth year of 1572 and his work experience after college.)

BIRTH DATES: The Visitation pedigree in The visitation of London, anno Domini 1633, 1634, and 1635 [1] states Anne Colles was the eldest daughter of Michael Colles, Esq. and Mary Graunt, the daughter of Edward Graunt, Esq. of Smitherfield/ Snitterfield and Northbrooke, county Warwick. We know Michael Colles was the second son after the eldest brother Edmond. According to Wikipedia, Edmond was born in 1528 [2] , putting Michael’s birth about 1530. We also have the marriage record of Anne’s parents, Michel Coles married Marie Graunt on 30 Jan 1561 in Snitterfield, Warwickshire County, England, found on freereg.org.uk [3] Therefore, Anne Colles was born c1561. William Cole was born 1540. They had oldest son, Michael [4], age 20 at the death of his father in 1600 [5] which places the marriage of William Cole and Anne Colles c1579.

LINEAGE: In addition to The Peerage of Ireland [1] and The Genealogy of the Family of Cole [2] the sources used here, the ancient scroll of genealogy of the Cole family prepared for the Viscount of Enniskillen is the source document used for both of those cited sources. The book: Coles of Devon, 1867 by James Edwin-Cole in a pdf format states the original book was written in 1630 and contains 15 pedigree charts of the ancient Cole family. This pdf links to the charts. [3]

The Visitation pedigree charts for the Cole family show William Cole, merchant, who married Anne Colles, is a cousin of Sir William Cole of Enniskillen. According to The Peerage of Ireland, the eldest son of Thomas Cole and Elizabeth Hargrave was William, who died 6 Feb 1600 and having married Anne; the second son was Thomas, who took holy orders; the third son was Emanuel who was the father of Sir William Cole, only son and “immediate ancestor to the Viscount Enniskillen”; and Solomon, of Liss. Each of these are found in the parish christening records, plus a few more totaling nine children for Thomas Cole, grocer. [4] The Parliamentary Memoirs of Fermanagh and Tyrone, from 1613 to 1885 also show that “Sir William Cole was the son of Emanuel Cole, third son of Thomas Cole, by Elizabeth Hargrave.” And that their eldest son was William, who married Anne Colles. BIRTH RECORD: As stated in the Bio, William Cole who married Anne Colles, the daughter of Michael Colles, was the son of Thomas Cole and Elizabeth Hargrave. The birth record for Willyam Cole, the son of Thomas Cole, grocer, is christening 12 May 1540 at St Mary le Bow and St Pancras Soper Lane with All Hallos Honey Lane, London, England, in "England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975." Database. FamilySearch. [1] The image page is better accessed at London, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812 found on ancestry.com. [2] As you scroll through the pages, all the children of Thomas Cole, grocer, are listed here.

The Peerage of Ireland [3] and The Genealogy of the Family of Cole [4] are used to source this page. These sources list four or five of their children, William being the oldest, and the parish christening record identifies them plus a few more totaling nine children for the couple.

DEATH / BURIAL: William Cole (-d. 1600) who married Anne Colles was the son and heir of Thomas Cole and Elizabeth Hargrave, the eldest of nine children as shown in “The visitation of London, anno Domini 1633, 1634, and 1635” [1] It also states William Cole of London died 16 Feb 1600 and “lieth buried in the quier of St. Margaret’s Church in Lothbury.” His wife Anne, the eldest daughter of Michael Colles, gent. died in “1598 lyeth buried by her husband”. This Visitation pedigree then names four of the children of William and Anne: Michael, William, Thomas and Margaret. These heraldic visitation pedigree charts are the source documents used in later genealogical books like The Peerage of Ireland and the Coles of Devon. I do not believe it is correct to say in the biography that William Cole was buried in Lincoln Cathedral; there is no source for that statement. It is not correct according to this Visitation source.

The Genealogy of the Family of Cole, of the County of Devon by James Edwin-Cole, published in 1867, on page 23 begins the family of Thomas Cole and Elizabeth Hargrave [2] by stating they had four sons and a daughter, Martha, who was married to John Warsop of Surrey; Martha was a sister of Willliam. It continues with William Cole and Anne Colles family on page 26. Martha Warsop and John Warsop are named in the will of William Cole along with several other children, namely Michael, Elizabeth, William, Thomas, Margaret, Rose, Giles and Sara. (An image of the will is in memories in FamilySearch.)

Few birth dates are provided in the Visitation pedigrees, however, Thomas Cole died in April 1571. His wife, Elizabeth Hargrave, gave birth to their first child, William, in 1540. We can only estimate their birth years.
