Walter David Cocksedge was born on 20th March 1913 in Glebe, in inner western suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. He was the third son of Charles Cocksedge and Sarah Petersen. [1] By 1917 the family had moved to the nearby suburb of Annandale.
Walter married Beryl Pilcher in 1936 in Ryde, New South Wales. [2] In 1940 the couple were living in Western Australia.
During the fighting withdrawal towards the south of Greece before the German onslaught in April, Walter was captured at Corinthia. Many hundreds of Australian soldiers were so captured. He was held as a prisoner of war by the Germans at Camp Corinthia; Stalag XVIII-A, south of the town of Wolfsberg, in the southern Austrian state of Carinthia; and Oflag III-C / Stalag 383, in Hohenfels, Bavaria. [4][5] After being liberated by American troops on 26th May 1945, he was repatriated to Australia. Although the war had been won in Europe, it was still raging in the Pacific. Walter was demobilised from the AIF on 13th December 1945. [3] For his war service he was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, War Medal 1939-1945 and Australia Service Medal 1939-1945. Walter's brothers, Charles (1909-51), Reginald (1910-73) and Allan (1917-), each of whom also served in Signals, all returned home also.
During Walter's incarceration, Beryl lived variously in Sydney at 29 Crescent Street, Manly; 11A Smith Street, Manly; 28 Andreas Street, Petersham; and 24 Lennarts Street, Enfield. [4]
Walter passed away, aged just 47 years, in 1960 in Chatswood, New South Wales. [6]
