DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships.
It is likely that these
autosomal DNA
test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:
I'd respectfully point out the unlikelihood that this couple would have four daughters named Elizabeth, three daughters named Mary, and two sons named Luke. ;)
Book Cockes and Cousins, Volume 1, Descendants of Richard Cocke gives a single daughter of William named Mary, not two daughters named Mary. Book is by Leonie Doss Cocke and Virginia Webb Cocke. Available on FamilySearch.org. Highly annotated.
Cocke-199 and Cocke-16 appear to represent the same person because: Same person. Assuming that birth year of 1670 is correct, as there are research notes and sources. Jacob Smith as spouse is incorrect (see comments below).
Cocke-16 and Cocke-199 appear to represent the same person because: Same father, he had 2 wives, unsure which wife was Mary's mother, so unsure date of birth. Husband was Obadiah Smith, per "The Cox Family in America", not Jacob, as Jacob was negro and intermarriage was illegal in the day.
Mary's spouse is Obadiah-3583. There's an extra Obadiah listed above. The children in the bio are correct, but not in the links above. I am guessing what happened here is that Mary Cocke and Obadiah Smith's son Obadiah's info has been mixed into this profile.
Cooke-2360 and Cocke-16 appear to represent the same person because: same name but different spelling; same spouse; same three children; B/D info are similar = same individual
I would suggest that Mary's DOB 1660 is a bit early, her father was born 1655. Check the link to "Genealogy of the Cocke Family of Virginia." The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography 3, no. 4 (1896): 405-14. http://www.jstor.org/stable/4241922. (p. 411) She is listed as daughter of William marrying Obediah Smith, no DOB is given.
There are several children in this family who were born before the date of the parents' marriage, and there are a few others who would have been born when the parents were in their 90s. Does anyone have definitive information to help sort this out?
