Biography

Thomas Clutterbuck was the son of Samuel Clutterbuck; he was named in his father’s will of 1752^[1], and as brother-in-law in the will of Bartholomew Hanly of Galway, probate 1773.^[2]

He was of the Common Council of the town of Galway in 1764^[3] and a sheriff of the same place in 1771.^[4]

He died shortly before 15 August 1774, when his death was reported in the Dublin Hibernian Journal: “died at Galway, Thomas Clutterbuck Esq., one of the Aldermen of that city “.^[5]

His will, dated 24 July 1774, named the following:

• sister Christian Hanley
• nephew Samuel Hanley
• mother Christian Clutterbuck
• niece Elizabeth Hanley
• cousin Charles French of Castle French
• Mathew 2nd son of Charles French
• Thomas eldest son of Nicholas Darcy of Gurteen Co. Galway

The will was proved at Dublin 30 January 1776.^[6]

Research Notes

He apparently married Catherine, daughter of Thomas Ffrench^[7]; she must have predeceased him, as not mentioned in his will.
