Biography

Thomas Clutterbuck was born 27 August and baptised 7 September 1623 at Dunton, Buckinghamshire, the son of Samuel Clutterbuck and Frances Smith.[1]

He matriculated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford, 12 July, 1639, aged 15; 3 years at Emmanuel College, Cambridge; demy Magdalen College 1642-4, B.A. 18 December 1643, fellow 1644 (until expelled by the parliamentary visitors 1648), M.A. 4 July, 1646; rector of Leakford, Hants, 1660; sinecure rector of Llandrillo in Edeirnion, co. Merioneth, 1660; rector of St. Mary's, Southampton, 1662; archdeacon of Winchester 1684.[2]

He married first, Jane Basket, 18 October 1651 at Dunton.[3] As a widower, he made an allegation for a licence to marry Susan Norton 9 June 1662.[4]

He was buried at Southampton 16 November 1700.[5] His will, dated 9 May 1700 with a codicil of 12 November 1700, included references to the following:

  • Dunton in Buckinghamshire “wherein I was born”
  • sister Frances Langton
  • brothers-in-law Roger Norton and Ambrose Norton and their wives
  • the Lady Fowle
  • sister Peacock
  • cousin William Lillinston and his wife Sarah my niece
  • cousin John Leach, his wife Mary my niece, their son Thomas
  • nephew Richard Clutterbuck
  • niece Frances Pagett
  • St Mary Magdalen College Oxford “whereof I was a Fellow”
  • wife Susan Clutterbuck
  • only son Roger Clutterbuck, his wife and children “he and his Family having within this eight years and halfe cost me eleven hundred pounds”
  • grandson and godson Samuel Clutterbuck, eldest son of Roger
  • granddaughter Susan, eldest daughter of Roger
  • grandson Thomas Clutterbuck, second son of Roger
  • eldest daughter Mary Clutterbuck
  • daughters Hester and Jane
  • son-in-law Richard Pocock

The will was proved at London 8 January 1700/1.[6]
