Biography

Lawrence was born in 1897[1]. He was the son of Austin Clutterbuck and Ruth Land. His father was a Mill Hand.

He lived with his parents and his brother Austin Bernard Jr. in Algoma, Ontario, Canada (1901), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada (1906) and Red Deer Sub-Districts 80-128, Alberta, Canada (1911).

Tragically his brother Austin Bernard died in February 1913, at age 13, when Lawrence accidentally shot him with a revolver. He was buried in Red Deer Cemetery.

When the 1st World War broke out, Lawrence was 17 years of age. He enlisted in Calgary in February 1915 and served in France and Belgium with the 18th Battalion and the Canadian Machine Gun Corps. He suffered shell shock and shell gas poisoning but he recovered and returned home in June 1919.[[1]]

In the 1921 Census of Canada 23 year old Lawrence was recorded as a Lodger in the household of William and Loma Burdette at 262 Wellington Ave, Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Also in the household was his mother Ruth.

He emigrated from Canada to the United States in 1922 (as did his mother)[2]. His occupation was recorded as Auto Mechanic.

He lived with his mother in San Diego where he worked as an auto mechanic and trainman. In 1927 he became a naturalised US Citizen[3].

Lawrence joined the San Diego police force on 10 January 1929, at age 31.

United States Census, 1930: Living with his mother Ruth (aged 55) in San Diego, California. He was by now aged about 32.

Occupation: Policeman

In May 1933 he was one of nine officers injured during a communist parade and riot in San Diego. Around that same time he married and city directories listed his wife as Billie E. Clutterbuck, but by 1939 they were likely separated as they were listed at different addresses.

He passed away in 1939 at the age of about 42[4], after being found dead in his bed, and was buried at Glen Abbey Memorial Park, Bonita, San Diego County, California[5]>
