WILLIAM JOHN CLIFTON (Clifton-2741)

PARENTS. Rev Robert Clifton & Elizabeth. He was the forty son and his father was British Chaplain at Bruges Belgium.

BIRTH. He was baptised 7/8/1815 at Cathedral Church, Gloucester, Gloucestershire. A Robert Clifton minor canon performed the service. This must have beem his father.

IMMIGRATION.

He arrived in the Swan River Colony aboard the Ameer on 11/2/1849.

Clifton, Esq., Registrar of Deeds, and of the Colonial Secretary's Office, fourth son of the Reverend Robert Clifton, British Chaplain at Bruges, Belgium, to Caroline, youngest daughter of M. Waller Clifton, M.L.C., and grand-daughter of the late Reverend Francis Clifton, of Alverstoke, Hants, Rector of Eastwell, and Prebendary of Lincoln.

OBITUARY. Death of W. J. Clifton, Esq., J.P. On Sunday morning last, Mr. Clifton, who had been ailing for a length of time, died. To mark the close of his life it may be said to have been sudden. His son who had been sitting up with him a part of the night went to bed, at the request of his father, who said he felt a little better. When the sun awoke he went to his father's room and found him dead. His complaint was heart disease and had attained the age of 69. Mr. Clifton leaves a very large circle of relations and friends ; and amongst the latter the York people outnumber any other part of the Colony. Of late years his health having become so impaired has unfitted him from mixing up with public affairs as formerly. In the early part of the Colony Mr. Clifton always took a very prominent part in furthering everything conducive to its interests. His remains were followed to the grave on Monday last, by a large number of respectable residents.
