Biography

Agnes de Clifford[1]

Agnes de Clifford was born circa 1277, daughter or granddaughter of Sir Roger de Clifford (d. 1286).[2]
She married Sir Henry Husee, son of Sir Matthew Huse and Agnes de Saunford, before 23 July 1290.[3] She and Sir Henry Husee (b. 1 Aug 1240, d. 23 Jul 1290) had no children.[4]
Agnes de Clifford and Sir Peter de Brewes (b. c 1273, d. c 7 Feb 1312[4]) obtained a marriage license on 6 June 1300.[5]
Children
  • Margaret de Brewes (d. 15 May 1349 or 22 May 1349),[4] married (1) Sir Henry, 2nd Lord Tyeys, (2) Sir Thomas, 2nd Lord Monthermer[6]
  • Mary de Brewes (b. c 1299, d. 11 Jun 1362),[4] married (1) Sir Ralph de Cobham, (2) Sir Thomas of Brotherton, Earl of Norfolk, Marshal of England[6]
  • Sir Thomas de Brewes, Lord Brewes, Justice of the Forest south of Trent (b. 8 Sep 1301, d. 9 Jun 1361 or 16 Jun 1361),[4] married Beatrice de Mortimer[6]
  • Sir John de Brewes (d 1342), married Margaret de Trehampton[6]
  • Sir Peter de Brewes (b. c 1310, d. c 4 Oct 1378),[4] married (1) Joan de Percy, (2) Joan Howard[6]
Agnes de Clifford died before 9 March 1332.[2]

Research Notes

The biographical information above is mostly from Lewis. Richardson's Magna Carta Ancestry (Vol. IV, p 180 TETBURY #5. Peter de Brewes), does not have a birth year for her and does not mention parents:

"Peter... younger son by his father's 3rd marriage, born about 1273 (aged 23 in 1296)... married by license dated 6 June 1300 Agnes de Clifford, widow of Henry Husee (or Hussey) (died 23 July 1290), of Harting, Sussex. They had three sons, Thomas, Knt. [Lord Brewes], John, Knt., and Peter, Knt., and two daughters, Margaret and Mary.... Agnes died sometime before 1332."
The Lewis citation of Richardson's Royal Ancestry, Vol IV, p 255-257, is for daughter Mary's second husband: NORFOLK #8. Thomas of Brotherton, Knt. (actually pp 256-258). They (Mary and Thomas) had no surviving issue.

Father (Grandfather?)

WikiTree profiles Clifford-1216 and Clifford-401, which both need work,[7] include information belonging to "Roger de Clifford (d. 1286)" as described by Richardson in Royal Ancestry, Vol V, pp 183-185, TREZOG #2.[8]
Richardson notes that Roger d. 1286 names daughter Alice in his 1284 will, but considering his footnote in the same volume (Royal Ancestry, Vol. V, p 143) that describes Agnes as either daughter or granddaughter of Roger d 1286, it does not appear that Richardson believes the Alice named in the will to be the same woman (although I think that if Agnes is daughter of Robert d 1286, she must be the daughter named in the will). ~ Noland-165 08:26, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
Footnote 10, p 143 in Vol V of Royal Ancestry, discusses the source for de Clifford as maiden name for Agnes: "...indicated by an ancient memorial window found in Wiston, Sussex [that ] includes a display of arms... Brewes arms impaling Clifford (indicating a Brewes-Clifford marriage) were likewise included among a series of heraldic escutcheons found at the tomb of Agnes' grandson, Thomas de Brewes, Knt.... The Clifford arms in question match those used by Roger de Clifford, Knt., of Tenbury, Worcestershire [died 1286].... In 1358 Agnes' son Thomas de Brewes, Knt. was styled 'kinsman' [consanguinei] by John de Grandison, Bishop of Exeter... [details of relationship ]. Given the heraldic evidence and the kinship to Bishop Grandison, it seems likely that Agnes (de Clifford) de Brewes was the daughter or granddaughter of Roger de Clifford, Knt. [died 1286]."
Note: Since the quoted passage includes bracketed text, text that I have added (in both instances replacing existing text) is italicized within the brackets. The footnote is quite long. Probably about half of it was skipped using ellipses and bracketed (italicized) text. ~ Noland-165 07:03, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

    • (1) Maud ______, widow of Hugh de Gournay
      • son by Maud: Roger de Clifford m Isabel de Vipont
    • (2) in June 1273 Countess _______, Countess of Loreto, who survived her husband Roger (d 1286).
In his 1284 will, Roger (d 1286) names a daughter, Alice, about whom Richardson only says she is "by an uncertain wife".

Clifford-3357 and Clifford-1215 appear to represent the same person because: Hi Jason! I just found these in reviewing Unmerged Matches. Do you think we should merge them and work on the combined profile or continue to keep the Clifford with husbands/kids separate from the Clifford with parents? If the latter, please "re-postpone" the merge.

Cheers, Liz

John, have you found Sir Henry Hussey of Harting etc, who m. Agnes (poss. same person as Alice) de Clifford, some lineal relation to Sir Roger who d. 1286?

Clifford-3357 and Clifford-1215 are not ready to be merged because: Jason - Clifford-1215 cites older sources than Clifford-3357, which discusses problem with who is Alice's father. I'm thinking maybe G2G could help?

update: name changed to Clifford

Hi Katherine! I'm working on a database error for husband Peter. He's currently both father and brother of Thomas Braose-24 because Peter's mother is attached as Thomas's mother instead of this Agnes... I'll switch that, but shouldn't this profile have the LNAB as "Clifford" instead of "Unknown"? If not, please post why not. Otherwise, I'll make that change.

Cheers, Liz
