Biography

Henry Clapham was born in Benwell, Northumberland, England.

Henry Clapham (1827-1883) was born on the 25th February 1827 at Benwell Grove in Northumberland. He was the son of a soap manufacturer, Anthony Clapham and Elizabeth Foster who were Quakers. ^[1] and as was the custom his birth was recorded at the quarterly meeting locally. ^[2]

In the 1841 census the family lived in Friars Grove in Gateshead ^[3] and after leaving school he was employed as a commission merchant. In the 1851 census the family lived on Summerhill Terrace at Elswick/Westgate near Newcastle. ^[4]

A notable event took place when Henry was travelling in Memel, East Prussia on business in September 1854. He, along with a few fellow travellers, went on a drive into the countryside near Garsden or Gardensk [sic] nearby. At that time, this happened to be on the frontier with Russia and it was during the Crimean War. They were engaged in friendly conversation with one of the officers at the guard post at the border who invited them over to better view the countryside but once over the border they were detained and taken to Wilno where they remained some days. They were ultimately released after some negotiations. ^[5]

He married Esther Mary Watson on the 20th July 1859 at the Quaker Meeting House in Newcastle. ^{[6] [7]}

They lived for some years on Summerhill Grove, where they started their family, ^[8] but their eldest son died in infancy so was absent from the 1861 census. ^{[9] [10]}

and Winchester Terrace near to where he had grown up overlooking Summerhill Park, in the Westgate/Elswick area of Newcastle. ^[11]

From the latter part of the 1860s to the late 1870s his residence was at Holly House in Gateshead, across the river ^[12] and he was still employed as an import and export merchant ^[13] but during the latter part of that same period he was recorded in the electoral registers at South Ashfield in the Elswick ward of Newcastle. ^[14]

He remained in Elswick and from around 1879 was recorded living in North Ashfield on Wentworth Place (since renamed Gloucester Terrace). ^[15] He had been elected to stand as a local councillor and was recorded as a ship owner and town councillor in the 1881 census. ^[16]

He would subsequently be appointed as the Sheriff of Newcastle in the Mayoral elections in November 1882 ^[17] but was not in that post very long before he fell ill in early June 1883 suffering a stroke. He died at his home, Jesmond Cottage, the following day on the 4th June 1883 ^{[18] [19] [20] [21]}

He was buried in the 7th June 1883 at St John's Westgate & Elswick Cemetery, Elswick. ^[22]
