Biography

Maud (Clapham) Armstrong was born in Gateshead, County Durham, England.

Maud Clapham (1869-1927) was born on the 5th March in Gateshead, County Durham. ^[1] She was the daughter of an import and export merchant, Henry Clapham and Esther Watson. ^{[1] [2]}

The family still lived at Holly House in the 1871 census ^[3] but moved north of the river to Elswick, Northumberland before 1881 when they were recorded living at North Ashfield. By that time her father had become a town councillor and was also recorded as a ship owner. ^[4]
Her father died in 1883 and in 1891 Maud was living with her mother and siblings on Osborne Road in Jesmond and she was described as living on own means. ^[5]

She married a widower with 2 sons, Henry Armstrong, on the 6th February 1895 at the Friends Meeting House in Newcastle on Tyne. He was the secretary of the Young Men's Christian Association in Newcastle. ^{[6] [7]}

They lived in Jesmond for some years, on Jesmond Road in the 1901 census ^[8] then on Osborne Avenue in the 1911 census. ^[9]

By 1921 they had moved out of the city north to Scrogg Wood, Bardon Mill, Northumberland. ^[10]

Her husband died in mid 1926 and Maud died the following year on Boxing Day, 26th December 1927. At that time she was living on the High Street in Rothbury, Northumberland. ^{[11] [12] [13]}

She was buried in Rothbury Cemetery on the 28th December 1927. ^[14]
