William married Margaret de Shurland, daughter of Sir Robert de Shurland (of Shurland, Isle of Sheppey, Kent) and Margery.[1][2][3][4] His wife inherited property from her brother Robert and her sister Maud.[1][2] William and Margaret had three sons:
William fought in France and Scotland. In the reign of Edward II he opposed both Piers Gaveston and Hugh le Despenser. In 1322 he fought with Thomas of Lancaster's forces in the Battle of Boroughbridge: he is believed to have been hanged at York or Pontefract after this.[1][2]
Research Notes
Henry Cheney has previously been shown on WikiTree as a child of William and Margaret. There seems to be no good evidence for this, and he has been detached. Henry is not listed as a child in the works of Douglas Richardson[1][2] or in the Cheney pedigree in the Berkshire Visitations.[3]

William also appears in Magna Carta Ancestry in a Richardson-documented trail from Gateway Edward Raynsford to surety baron Geoffrey de Say (vol. III, pages 422-427 RAYNSFORD) that was badged by the Project in August 2023. This trail is set out in the Magna Carta Trails section of Robert Raynsford's profile.
See Base Camp for more information about Magna Carta trails. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".

Wrong date of death for William, as it is stated he was hanged in March, 1322. The 1334 date actually belongs to his son William, according to The Cheyne Family Website http://sites.rootsweb.com/~cheyne/p12702.htm
Thanks. The date was right in the bio and I have amended the death field to correspond and added the death place. The profile needs a more general review in due course.
