Biography

Francis Charteris, son of Francis Wemyss Charteris and Susan Tracy-Keck was born on 15 April 1772 and baptised in the parish of Prestonkirk, East Lothian on 25 April 1772.[1][2]

On 31 August 1794, Francis married Margaret Campbell at Edinburgh.[2]

In 1808, Francis succeeded to his grandfather Francis Wemyss Charteris' estates, but didn't succeed to the title until 26 May 1826 when he was restored to the Earldom of Wemyss by the reversal of the attainder of 1746 by an Act of Parliament.[2]

In 1810, on the death of William Douglas 4th Duke of Queensberry, and as heir to his great-great grandmother Anna Douglas Francis inherited the castle and Barony of Neidpath in Peeblesshire. He also tried to claim the title of Earl of March, but it was not recognised.[2]

Francis died at Gosford House, East Lothian on 28 June 1853.[2]
