Biography

Francis Charteris is a member of Clan Wemyss.

Francis Charteris was the second son born to Sir Francis Wemyss-Charteris and his wife Catherine Gordon and was baptised in the parish of Haddington, East Lothian on 2 February 1749.^[1]

Francis married Susan Tracy-Keck, daughter of Anthony Tracy later Tracy-Keck, of Great Tew, co. Oxford, by his wife Lady Susan Hamilton, in the parish of Prestonkirk, East Lothian on 18 July 1771.^[2][3]

Francis Charteris was the Member of Parliament for Haddington Burghs from 1780-87 but was deprived of his seat when the House of Commons decided that he was the eldest son of a peer (incorrectly as the title was still forfeited).^[4][3]

Francis died, after a long illness, on 20 January 1808 at Amisfield House, East Lothian.^[3]
