John Chandler [1]

Note: The reference for much of the biography from merged profile Chandler-2093 appears to have been an online family tree that has been retrieved using the Internet Archive Wayback machine. Hopefully this link is the correct one for the Chandler Family Association[2] The biography included statements questioning the marriage order and showed two sons named Robert. The Chandler Family Association (CFA) was clear that John Chandler married Elizabeth Lupo (widow of Lt. Lupo). Lt. and Elizabeth Lupo, of Elizabeth City, both received patents in Virginia in 1624 (which is supported by "The First Pioneer Families Of Virginia"[3]). CFA shows that John's known sons, John and Robert, were by Elizabeth.[4]

John Chandler was born in 1600 in England.[5] He immigrated to Virginia Colony in 1610 and settled in the future Elizabeth City County area of the Virginia Colony.[5]

Origins

A John Chandler was Christened on September 7, 1600 at St. Margaret's Westminster London. The father was John Chandler. [6]Mother is unknown. Three other children of John Chandler apparently also were christened at St. Margaret's. They were Nicholas b 1597, William b 1603 (b&d, plague) and Magdalen b 1608. There was also a John who died in 1603 (plague year), but the author does not think that this one was John b 1600. No argument for this conclusion is offered.[5]

Immigrated to Virginia

John's family emigrated June 10, 1610 from London, England on the ship Hercules.[5][7][8] John was only nine years old during the voyage.

"No records have been found to document any relative of John Chandler among the three ships in Delaware’s fleet, nor in the Virginia colony at that time. However, given Delaware’s passenger restrictions [no women or children], it seems likely that little John was in some way closely connected to someone deemed essential to Delaware’s enterprise."[4]

The Chandler Family Association

The John Chandler that was christened 7 Sep 1600 was the son of John. The Chandler Family Association has a copy of the original record and more information about this person on their website.[4] and christening record.[9]

The Chandler Family Association (CFA) has provided the excellent results of its research on the John Chandler who was born in 1600 and came to the Virginia Colony in 1610.
John's birth in 1600 is confirmed by two documents. One is his Christening record which shows he was Christened on 7 September 1600 at St. Margaret's Church in London. The second is the February 1624/25 census, at the age of 24, where he is listed as a "servant" in the household of Ensign Thomas Willoughby. Per the CFA, the term "servant" may more appropriately mean "employee."
These early records also show his parents were not Richard and Dorothy Chandler.[10] The Christening record has his father listed as John, but no mother is listed. Based her date of death (1596), Dorothy Chandler could not have been John's mother.

John's Family

Elizabeth Lupo was a widow (Lt. Lupo died October 1626) when John married her,[11] and her land transferred to John. John had two known children, John and Robert. (Some online trees show that John's wife was Elizabeth Bassano[5][citation needed] One online tree showed two marriages, to an Elizabeth "Unknown" and an Elizabeth Lupo or Bassano.[5] It included the following note:
"These marriage dates, and even the order of the two marriages are questionable. The evidence is not straightforward. We know that Margaret [sic] widow Lupo (not named Lupo) was widowed in 1626. Also we have a 1636 land patent in which she is called, 'his now wife, Elizabeth Chandler.'"[12]
A passage by another online author supports two marriages, but is also probably the source of confusion just mentioned. Elizabeth Lupo could not be either the mother of Robert Chandler born 1626 or transported from England in 1636, as she had received a land patent in Virginia (1624), where she was widowed (October 1626).
"John was single at the time of the Muster (1624) but was married soon thereafter. His son Robert was born about 1626 while he was living at Kiccoughtan, later known as Elizabeth City County. The name of John's wife and the mother of Robert is not known. She died before 1636. John remarried in 1636, having transported his second wife, Elizabeth from England. He continued to live in Elizabeth City County with large land holdings that bordered on Warwick County, and he served his community.[13]
Children:
  1. Robert Chandler (born circa 1629/30[4]) b. Abt. 1628, Elizabeth City County, Virginia, d. 1669, New Kent County, Virginia[citation needed]
  2. John Chandler (John Chandler, born circa 1627/8[4]) b. Abt. 1635, Elizabeth City Co., Virginia, d. 1692[citation needed]
There is some evidence among land patents from Elizabeth City that John may have had a son, Daniel.[5]

Occupation

John is listed in 1632 in a land patent book as a "Planter &c."[5] He is listed at muster twice:[5]
Census 1: February 16, 1623/24, Elizabeth Cittie Muster.[14][15]
Census 2: February 7, 1624/25, now listed as "Chaundler age 24 (servant)."[16][17]
One author offers that this term, servant, is in reference to his relationship with comrade, cohort, and commander, Thomas Willoughby.[13]
John was elected to the House of Burgesses in 1644 and 1646.[18] He was the Elizabeth City County Court Justice from 1646 until at least February 1657/8. John is last mentioned in surviving records as present in a court proceeding on February 12, 1657/58.[4]

Death

Probably died not long after the last mention of him in surviving court record (February 12, 1657/58), but the date of John's death and location of his grave are unknown:[4]
"His date and place of death are not known; neither is the place of his burial. It seems likely that he and Elizabeth lie in unmarked graves of the third St. John’s Church in Hampton or perhaps on the 350-acre Chandler-Lupo tract, where a tentative homestead has been located.[31]"[4]
[31]"Chandler, Joseph Barron Jr., John Chandler, 1610 Immigrant and Some of His Descendants, Part IV, TVF, Vols. 11, #2, 2002 (see entire article). In a triangular spot now named Robinson Park in the city of Hampton, in a vicinity referred to as the Chandler homeplace in 1749, lunch on the grounds was held during the 2004 CFA Annual Meeting."[4]
John Chandler passed away in 1660 at Elizabeth City County, Virginia.[5]

A 1742 lawsuit in Elizabeth City County is completely documented in the article 'Old Kecoughtan.' Evidence presented in it included the Last Will and Testament of Richard Morrison dated 28 December 1648. one excerpt from that will reads as follows:

Fourthly, I will and bequeath unto my sonne Richard and to his Heirs forever my Plantation whereon I now live and to be delivered unto him after the decease of my said wife, and of this my Last Will and Testament, I do make my well beloved wife, Winifred Morryson, my sold Executrix, And I do desire

my well beloved friends Maj. John Chandler and Richard Hull to be my Overseers of this my Last Will and Testament. In Witness hereof I, the said Richard Morryson have hereunto sett my Hand and Seal the Ninth day of September, Anno Dom. 1646.[19]

Elizabeth Lupo of Elizabeth City, wife of Albino [sic] Lupo (1624). See "The First Pioneer Families Of Virginia," A. C. Lt Lupo died Oct. 1626 & his widow married John Chandler. (according to Chandler Family Association)

Don't know where Bassano comes from.

Hi! Text in this profile says his father is John Chandler (not Richard) and his mother couldn't be the Dorothy attached as his mother, since her profile has her death as 1596 & this John (son of John, not Richard) was born 1600. So... I'm going to detach the parents & propose the merge with Chandler-2093 ... unless I'm missing something obvious? If so give a holler!

Match with Chandler-1220: Chandler-898 looks like the lowest numbered correct LNAB, if parents conflict can be resolved, all duplicates to go into Chandler-898

Match with Chandler-2093: Unmerged match is set until resolution of parents. I have not seen Richard and Dorothy for parents of John chandler, b 1600, immigrant to Elizabeth City, VA, married widow Lupo. Please post accessible source?
