Patrick: I have just joined WikiTree after seeing your post on Michael James Whitty. I am also a 3rd Great Grandson of Michael James Whitty, through Edward Muchael Whitty, Frances Mary Whitty/Hayes, Frank Lage Hayes and my father Francis Nicholas Hayes. I have uploaded / added as best I can from my Ancestry site which I shall be closing having found a much better site. I hope to add to a number of the profiles over time, I have a lot of material on Michael James Whitty's life work.

Go carefully Tim! My daughter started me off with the genealogy game. She dug out a great deal of circumstantial information on Michael Whitty (Vinegar Hill etc.) and the result was an overloaded profile. Although M. Whitty is probably worth a book, this is not the place for it. The object of Wikitree is to create a verified genealogy, not a social study of social problems in Ireland etc. It took me quite some time to compose the entry for Michael Whitty - please don't alter it without consulting me.

It's fine if you add in the various relatives - I didn't bother, because I was only looking for direct ancestry, and once you start getting into cousins, then you are soon looking at the whole world.

BTW: treat all ancestry.com info as suspect until proved otherwise. And my daughter gave up on the O'Neills, as looking for a Mary O'Neill in Ireland is like looking for a John Smith in England. The sources are incomplete and ambiguous.

With these cautions - good luck with your research!

Hey Patrick,

Thanks for your advice. Having completed an upload I went carefully through and reviewed all suggestions. Many of my ancestors were located from UK Census records, birth / marriage / death records as well as original diary entries. I have also accumulated a large collection of contemporaneous material such as press cuttings, gazettes and books relating to the Whitty and Hayes families. I accept that some I added O'Neill records which were not validated and also Hidges records which again, beyond my personal knowledge were not validated. I will remove these from the tree. What I did not find were any Michael James Whitty descendants in the existing trees which you had commented on. Perhaps that is where I have mistaken how to work with Wikitree.

I will certainly NOT amend the MJW records without consulting you, but I will under separate cover send you a letter written by him to Dr R R Madden in May 1968 which has his own account of his life.

Patrick, I notice that you have added LAIDLAW to your list of surnames. My Laidlaws are from the Lowlands. I seem to have exhausted them, and to have moved further out along the limbs of my family tree. The Laidlaws from Selkirk are covered better by Bruce Laidlaw. There seems to be very little overlap between us, although one of mine has an ancestor in Ettrick whom Bruce updated within the last few days.

The present Laidlaw updating is the result of ongoing cooperation between Bruce and myself. The paucity of information and repeated use of the same single forenames makes it awkward with plenty of opportunities for confusion.

Hi, Patrick

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Thanks for having a Big Heart and taking responsibility for Orphaned Profiles. You will want to read this After Adopting Orphans as it explains the special attention adopted profiles will sometimes need from their profile managers.
