According to Lancashire Online Parish Clerks Alexander Chadwicke married Joane Worrall in Manchester 05 Feb 1603/4 [1] (private transcription). An Alexander Chadwicke (quite possibly the same one) did marry 20 Nov 1599 (unnamed spouse), and also prior to that in Rochdale 11 Aug 1583 (also unnamed but presumably Joan Bennett). If this is the same Alexander throughout it would account for all 18 children listed in Lancs OPC , including 3 baptised in Manchester. The earlier children listed with mother Joan Worrall would need to be linked to a different mother but it would get rid of the problem that Joan was only 12 when she had her first child!
There was an Alexander Chadwick, the father of the Charles Chadwick who immigrated to America in 1630 with Gov. Winthrop. Charles died in 1682, age 86 years. Anderson states that Charles' birth was "About 1596 based on age at death, although this may be exaggerated by a few years."[2] The baptism record for Charles in Rochdale, Lancashire, England shows him born on April 24, 1597, and names his father as Alexander Chadwick.[3] Given the accuracy of the death record, it is likely that this is the same man.
The problem in finding a valid source is that Rochdale and vicinity were full of Chadwicks in the 16th and 17th centuries (it still is) and that they tended to have very common first names, like John, Charles, Alexander, and Richard, so that it is very hard to associate a particular record with a specific individual. Also the records usually ignored females.
There are many family trees on record that show Alexander Chadwick in Rochdale at the end of the 16th century. Few of them show him as the father of Charles, and most of them show him as the father of John Chadwick who came to America sometime later than Charles, but birth records in Rochdale show that John Chadwick, born 1601, was the son of Richard, and that Charles Chadwick, born 1597, was the son of Alexander.
There is much misinformation floating around about Alexander Chadwick and his parentage and family, but I have not found any source records. In most family trees he is said to be the son of (Sir) John Chadwick of Rochdale and born in either 1558 or 1566.[4] His wife is generally given as Unknown, but sometimes it is Joan Warrall.[5]
Alexander Chadwick married an unknown woman on November 20, 1599, but either this was a second marriage or this is a different Alexander, since Charles was born in 1597.[6]
There are eleven children who have Alexander Chadwick as their father born in Rochdale during the period 1580 to 1610: Elizabeth, b. 1584; Robert, 1586; Mary, 1588, 1600; Richard, 1590; Katheryn, 1592; Ann, 1594; Charles, 1597; William, 1602; Sibell, 1604, 1608; Edmund, 1606; and Margaret, 1610.[7]
Alexander died on April 20, 1624 in Rochdale.[8]
