This category is managed by the Homesteaders Project. It is a top level category and should not be used on profiles.
The United States, Homesteaders category has been divided by state and county for the public land states. These are the states of Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
There is no public land in the original 13 colonies and other states in the east because Congress gave up its claims to any land within the boundaries of the Colonies. The States gave up their claims to what is now Alabama, Michigan, part of Minnesota, Mississippi, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin so that the United States could sell it to raise money for the U. S. Treasury for the common benefit of the country.
Please select the location where your ancestor filed for a homestead at the state/county level.
