Giovanni Battista Castagna was born in Rome on 4 August 1521 to Cosimo Castagna and Costanza Ricci Giacobazzi, a noble family.[1]
He was ordained a priest on 30 March 1553 by Filippo Archinto and consecrated a bishop on 4 April 1553 by Girolamo Verallo. He was created a Cardinal on 12 December 1583 by Pope Gregory XIII. He was elected Pope on 15 September 1590 taking the name Urban VII.
He died on 27 September 1590 in Rome, Papal States.
