Thomas Cassin was born on 8 Nov 1848 and baptized on 19 Nov 1848 in the parish of Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, the son of Thomas Cassin and Bridget O'Neill.[1]

In the 1861 census Thos. (age 13) lived in Valcartier (St. Gabriel), Québec, Canada East (Quebec).[2]

Thomas married Ellen McDermot on 24 Apr 1882 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.[3] Their children were:

  1. Francis Dennis Cassin (1884 - 1937)
  2. Thomas James Cassin (1886 - 1959)
  3. Kathryn Ellen Cassin (1888 - 1902)
  4. Mary (Cassin) O'Donnell (1891 - 1977)
  5. Morgan Charles Cassin (1893 - 1970)
  6. Margaret Josephine (Cassin) Fraser (1895 - 1965)

Thomas came to Manitoba in 1871 or 1873 and worked on the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway for about fifteen years. He came to Manitou in 1890 and managed the Stewart House hotel, which he later purchased and renamed the Cassin House hotel. Around 1891, a fire burned the hotel and it had to be rebuilt. While it was being rebuilt Thomas purchased land in Kaleida to farm on. In 1913 Thomas's son Frank ran the hotel business for a few years before it was sold in 1916.[4][5][6]

In the 1891 census Thomas (age 39) lived in Dufferin South, Selkirk, Manitoba.[7] He worked as a hotel keeper and lived with his wife Ellen and children Frank, Thomas, and Catherine.

In the 1911 census Thomas (age 62), hotel keeper, lived in Manitou, Lisgar, Manitoba.[9]

He died on 13 Oct 1927 in Pembina, Manitoba.[10][11]
