Biography

Russell Adams Carver was born at Livermore, Maine, on 13 Apr 1850, the son of Nathan Carver and Hannah Green (Adams) Carver.^[1]

The 1850 US census for Livermore, Maine conducted 22 Aug 1850 lists residents Nathan Carver (38), a farmer, Hannah G (28), Evelyn M (3), Hannah A (1), and Russel [sic] A (2 months). Nathan owns real estate valued at $937.

The 1860 US census for Livermore, Maine conducted 19 Jun 1860 lists residents Nathan Carver (48), a farmer, Hannah G (38), Eveline M (13), a student, Abby (11), Russell A (10), a student, Willie E (7), a student, Emma L (5), a student, Nathan E (3) and Ellen L (10 months). Abby is not a student, and a note is attached stating that she is insane caused by whooping cough. Nathan owns real estate valued at $1400 and has a personal estate valued at $450.

The 1880 US census for Dixfield, Maine lists residents Nathan Carver (68), widowed, a farmer, his son Russel [sic] (30), also a farmer, and daughter Rosa (19), keeping house. She attended school within the past year. Nathan's son William (27), a farmer, and daughter-in-law Alma (26) live next door.

A marriage intention was filed on 18 Jan 1881 at Dixfield, Maine for Russell A Carver and Cornelia E Newton, both of Dixfield. They were the parents of one known child, George Dennis Carver b. 15 May 1883, d. 1941.

In 1885 he was the editor of the Livermore Falls Advocate.^[2]

On 21 Mar 1896, at Rumford Falls, Maine, Russell married Hariette Dow Tucker, daughter of Stephen B Dow, a sea captain, and Maria F Harris, a second marriage for each. They were both residents of Rumford, Maine at the time of the marriage, and both were widowed. He is employed as a printer and she as a nurse.

The 1910 US census lists residents of a farm as head of household, widow Maria H Dow (76), born in Massachusetts, has her own income, her son-in-law Russell A Carven [sic] (60), born in Maine, working out as a gardener, his wife Henriette D Carven [sic] (49), born in New Hampshire. Maria was the mother of six children, five living at the time of the census; she owns the farm. Russell and Henriette have been married for fourteen years. Harriette has had no children.
