Biography
Thaxton was born in NY in 1839, probably in Wayne County New York (see research notes for more discussion). He was the son of Ezra Carlton and Mary Howland.[1]
The family moved back to Maine in about 1843. After their father and brother died, the Carltons moved with their mother to DeKalb Co, IL in 1855.[2]
Thaxton's first marriage was to Sarah A. Carpenter in 1861 in McLean Co IL.[3] Children: Emma, Florentine, Osca, Addie. Thaxton and children moved west while Sarah remained in Illinois.[4]
His second marriage was to Eliza J. (nee Hathaway) Crittenden Ames in 1884 in Dodge City, Kansas.[5] Eliza died in 1888.[6][7]
Third marriage was to Lillian M. Gale in 1888.[8] Children: Gayle.
Thaxton lived in El Paso Co, CO in 1900. He died in 1907.[9]

Research Notes
- Birth location - Most indications are that he was born in 1839. The family is found in Huron Township, Wayne Co, NY in the 1840 census. In the 1850 and 1860 census, he is indicated as born in NY (that fits). However, on later census he indicates birth in Maine. He may have done this since the rest of the family was born in ME, and the short time the family spent in NY when he was born may have been forgotten.
