John Cantine was a grandchild of a Huguenot emigrant (1540-1790).

Johannes Cantine was born 20 October 1735 in Marbletown, Ulster, New York. He was the son of Pieter Cantine and Elisabeth Blanjan. He passed away 30 April 1808 in Caroline, Tompkins, New York.

1735 Nov 16: baptism of Johannes. Parents: Pieter Kantyn , Elisabeth Blansjan. Witnesses: Mathys Blansjan.[1]

He was a member of New York state assembly from Ulster County, 1777-1778, 1779-1781, 1783-1785, 1786-1789; a delegate from Ulster County to the New York convention to ratify U.S. constitution in 1788; and a member of New York state senate for the Middle District, 1789-1797.

"It is further my will and desire and I do hereby order that my Negro man, William, shall, after my decease, have his freedom and be free. And should it so happen that during his life time he be in want for any of the necessaries of life, it is my will and desire that my son, Charles, shall provide fore him all that may be sufficient for his support, and should he choose to do for himself and meet with any sickness, my son Charles shall provide for him necessary medical aid. It ws also my will and desire that after my decease, my Negro woman, Sara, shall have her freedom and be free, and I also hereby direct and order the my Negro boy, Hank, shall serve my son John, his heirs or executors until he shall arrive the age of 28 years, after which period, he shall have his freedom and be free. It is my will and desire and I hereby direct that my negro boy, Edd, shall serve my son Charles until he arrives to the age of 28 years, after which period he shall be set free and have his freedom. Then it is my will and desire that my Negro boy, Philip, shall serve my son, Moses, until he arrives at the age of 28 years, after which period he shall have his freedom and be free."
