Thomas emigrated to Australia at age 17 on the barque China, departing London August 1847, and arriving in Port Adelaide, South Australia, 14 December 1847. [2] Thomas travelled with his extended family:[1]

  • Phoebe's third husband George Dickerson and his son William Dickerson (13 years)
  • Sister Abigail Jane Cannell, her husband George Johnson, and their daughter Sophia Cannell Johnson (3 years)

The family established themselves in farming in the Tiers (now called the Adelaide Hills). George Dickerson is recorded purchasing 117 acres in 1852, and sold the Northern half to Thomas and George Johnson. [1]
