Conflation Issues

Conflations: William Canaday, s. of Cornelius Canaday and Susan (Unknown) of Calvert County appears to be conflated with William Canneday of Somerset County and another Unknown Cannaday. Similar conflations appear across other online family genealogy sites. Sorted information below:
William of this profile:
William Canaday of Resurrection Hundred, Calvert County, Maryland:
b. likely c1648 - c1654, the 3rd of four children born of English immigrant Cornelius Canaday and Susan his wife, she of Virginia prior to their marriage. [10]
  • William's father, Cornelius Canedy, arrived from England to colonial provinces c1642, serving an indenture of 3 yrs beginning at St. Clemente, St Mary's County, MD (not Prince George's County as previously stated). He removed to VA the 2nd yr of his indenture (Feb. 1643) where he served his remaining 2yrs. He married Susan (poss. Atcheson[10]) of Virginia and moved to Calvert County, MD by 1652. They divorced in 1656, she retaining property and custody of their children, including William. [10]
  • 1663, Calvert MD: William is mentioned as a legatee in his mother's will, 3rd of four children, his father presumed deceased by then. [10] No birthdates or ages of children are recorded, but it appears all four were minors.
  • While one research notation speculates William may have reached majority age by the time his mother died in Sept 1663, several notations by same researcher state he died a minor. [10]
  • Since Cornelius immigrated in 1642 a single man, removed to VA Feb. 1643, and subsequently married Susan, it appears highly unlikely that any of their children reached majority age by 1663.
William does not appear in civil records after 1663. No probate or property records show he owned property, acquired tenancy, or registered earmarks for livestock. Most researchers believe he and at least one other sibling died soon after their mother. It is also possible William was already bound out on an apprenticeship and simply became untraceable in civil records.
  • Spouse: While he may be the same man who married Ann Fischer on 26 Apr 1668 in Somerset County, MD, it is unlikely: aside from hindrances such as distance and a body of water between Calvert and Somerset Counties, his specific family line had no known ties to Somerset County. Also, Somerset County records appear to provide clear evidence she married a different William Canneday, one who arrived to Somerset County MD from England in 1665.
Re: William Canneday of Somerset County, Maryland: According to family researcher Bill Putnam, William Canneday (alt: Canaday) was transported from England by Quaker sympathizer Ambrose London of Somerset County MD in 1665, William purchased Anne Fischer's indenture and married her in 1668. [1] Children: Mary Canneday [2] and William Canneday [3] mentioned above are ascribed to them. The couple divorced and Anne remarried c1676. William of Somerset County also remarried, his additional (alleged) children Roger, John.[11]
