Robert was born on Mar 28, 1875, in Athens, Georgia. However his veteran Master Index File states he was born in 1881.
He served in WWI and received the Distinguished Service Cross for service during WWI[1] According to ''American decorations : a list of awards of the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Distinguished-Service Cross and the Distinguished-Service Medal awarded under authority of the Congress of the United States, he performed the following acts[2]:
"CAMPBELL, ROBERT L: First Lieutenant, 368th Infantry, 92d Division, near Binarville, France, Sept 27, 1918. By G. O. No. 27, W.D., 1919:
In the afternoon of Sept 27, 1918, Lieutenant Campbell saw a runner fall wounded in the middle of a field swept by heavy machine-gun fire. At Imminent peril to his own life, and in full view of the enemy, he crossed the field and carried the wounded soldier to shelter.."
He taught at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (A&T) for many years, affectionately known as "Captain" around campus. He was noted as receiving numerous medals:
In 1951, he was awarded the Tuskegee Institute "Alumni Merit Award, for his service to advancement of human welfare. [3] He was also a former commander of an American Legion [4]
He passed away on Jan 2, 1972, Los Angeles, California,[5] and is buried in Los Angeles National Cemetery, Los Angeles, California.[6]
