Deacon Joseph Butman performed Patriotic Service in Massachusetts in the American Revolution.
Deacon Joseph Butman was born about 1740 in Essex County, Massachusetts and died on 16 October 1812 in Marblehead, Massachusetts at age 71 years. [1]

He served as a deacon of the church of Marblehead.
His will was in probate on 17 April 1811 in Essex County, Massachusetts. [2]
He married first Jane Wells on 28 November 1769 at Marblehead; then married 2d Emma Morse on 22 May 1774.

In Cutter's work on p.303-304, when writing about Joseph's children he skips from child 4. Betsey to child 6. Polly and does not mention Mary whose death appears in Mass. Vital Records.
He was a soldier in the Revolution in 1777 under Captain Edward Fettyplace, engaged in guarding the coast. He was also in the navy and was taken prisoner. He was delivered with other prisoners to Colonel Gabriel Johonnot on 17 March 1778 by Charles Waller, commissary of prisoners to at Rhode Island. He may have lived in Danvers, Massachusetts for a time.

It must have been Emma Morse who died on 20 Dec 1807. Records in Marblehead Deaths only have the following:
