This may be Lasowice Male, renamed during WWI to Polnisch Lasowitz, and now known as Lasowice Wielkie, in Poland. )


Reginald enlisted into the Northants Yeomanry, Sep 1914 ( Reg. No. 791 ).

At Gailes Camp, North Ayrshire ( ? ) on 10 Jul 1917 ( Ann Rowbottom has a telegram sent by Reginald, to Agnes Burton & Fred Bagshaw on the occasion of their marriage ). [1]

Joined 8bn Worcestershire Regiment ( Reg. No.145145 ).

Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 16 Oct 1917.


Wounded on 14 Apr 1918, during an attempted counter attack, leading 15 men, on enemy hilltop gun positions and advancing troops, after being pinned down at Neuve Eglise ( Nieuwkerke ). This was preventing a 'fall back' of an almost surrounded position taking place during the Battle of Bailleul, part of the German Spring Offensive of Mar-Jul, 1918 ; captured & taken to Courtrai ( Kortrijk ), a transit point for prisoners & field hospital for wounded men, where he later passed away ( on 15 Apr 1918 )

Reginald ( 25 ) passed away on 15 Apr 1918, in Courtrai ( Kortrijk ), Belgium.


Reginald was buried in Kortrijk ( St.Jan ) Communal Cemetary, Kortrijk ( Courtrai ), West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Grave C9. [6]

A comemorative plaque is mounted inside the Parish Church of St.Peter at Lutton, Northamptonshire
Plaque text :
"BURTON, Reginald John, 2nd Lieutenant, 8th Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment. Died of wounds Monday 15th April 1918 in Military Hospital Courtrai in German hands. Age 25. Son of John Richard and Mary Ann Burton, of Lutton, Oundle, Northants. Served with Northamptonshire Yeomanry from November, 1914, to March, 1917".
