Biography

At age 37 in summer 1877, Joseph married 23-year-old Mary Jane Johnston in New Westminster, British Columbia.^[1]

At the time of the 1881 Canada Census, Joseph and Mary Jane Burr lived in New Westminster North, British Columbia, Canada, with two children. Joseph worked as a carpenter, and the whole family were members of the Church of England.^[2]

At the time of the 1891 Canada Census, Joseph, M J, Alice M.M., Edna A, Bessie, M.J., and Wm J Burr were listed as living in New Westminster, British Columbia.^[3] At the time of the census, Joseph's occupation was listed as "Guard in Gaol". He was promoted to head guard later that same year.^[4]

At the time of the 1901 Canada Census, Joseph, J Mary, Edna, Bessie, J Martha, J William, and B James Burr were listed as living in New Westminster, British Columbia.^[5]

At the time of the 1911 Canada Census, Joseph, Mary Jane, Bessie, Martha, William, and James Burr were listed as living in New Westminster, British Columbia.^[6]

Joseph Burr passed away in autumn 1913:^[7]

MR. JOSEPH BURR DIES SUDDENLY AT HOME NEW WESTMINSTER, Nov. 28 -- Mr. Joseph Burr, pioneer who came here in 1860 by way of the Isthmus of Panama with his sister, Mrs. William Johnson sr., and a brother, Benjamin, died suddenly at his home, 624 Royal avenue. Mr. Burr [w]as well [k]nown as builder of many of the earlier highways of the province. He laid out the grounds about the court house and the flag pole was his handicraft. Thirty years ago Mr. Burr became one of the guards at the New Westminster jail and was soon made head guard. Early this summer he was retired by the provincial government. Mr. Burr is survived by a widow, Mrs. Mary Jane Burr; four daughters, Mrs. S. F. Mark, Mrs. E. R. Rich, Mrs. I. Wintemute and Miss Bessie Burr; two sons, William J. and James B., and his sister, all residents of this city.^[8]
