Mary (Burnett) Talbert was awarded the Spingarn Medal for outstanding achievement by an African American.

Mary Burnett Talbert was a famous activist, most notably for women's suffrage.

In 1922, she became the first woman to be awarded the NAACP's Spingarn Medal. In 2005, she was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame.[1]

Mary was born 17 Sep 1866 in Oberlin, Lorain County, Ohio, United States of America.[2] She was the daughter of Cornelius J. Burnett (abt.1814-1896) and Caroline (Nichols) Burnett (abt.1827-abt.1905). She grew up in Oberlin, where her parents ran a boarding house on Main Street as well as a barber shop, with the family residing in the back of the building.[3]

Mary graduated from Oberlin College when she was just 19 years old, and then moved to Little Rock, Arkansas. There, she started as a high school teacher and in 1887 was named Vice Principal of Little Rock’s Union High School.[1][4]

Mary married William H. Talbert on 8 Sep 1891.[5] (Her sister Henrietta married her husband's brother Robert.) Mary and William had one daughter: Sarah May (Talbert) Keelan (1892-1987).

After their marriage, William and Mary moved to Buffalo, New York. There, Mary rose to international prominence for her activism. In 1905, the founders of the Niagara Movement met secretly in Mary's Buffalo home to adopt the resolutions that led to the Niagara Movement.[1] [6]

Some of her most notable accomplishments and leadership positions include:

  • President of the National Association of Colored Women's Clubs (NACWC) from 1916-1920
  • Delegate to the 1920 International Council of Women, held in Norway
  • Leader of NACWC's successful efforts to restore Frederick Douglass's home in Anacostia, Maryland
  • Served as a Red Cross nurse in France during World War I

One of the last causes she championed was Dyer's anti-lynching bill.

Mary died at her home in Buffalo, Erie County, New York on 15 Oct 1923.[4][7] She is buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo.[8]
