Biography

Reuben was a Friend (Quaker)

Reuben was born on 27 Mar 1784 in New York, reportedly the son of Reuben and Elizabeth Burlingam.[1] No primary source has been found to substantiate this. See Research Notes-- Sorting out the Burlingames

In 1818, Reuben Burlingham signed a school contract with other residents of Hallowell, Prince Edward, Canada West. The teacher, Robert Laing, was to "teach Reading, Writing and Arithmetic...at the School-house nearest Daniel Leavens and William Clark, in the Second concession of the second township." See McConnell bio for names of the other signers of the contract, along with the number of children for which each contracted.[2]

In 1833, Reuben was a witness on a McConnell family document, see McConnell Quit Claim.

In 1851, on the Canada census, Reuben reported that he was born in 1783 in New York. He was a farmer, a Quaker, and married to Phoebe. Phoebe (Leavens) was born in 1790 in New York, and was also a Quaker. A notation on the census is as follows:[3]

On the front of Lot ha6 3 concep(?) military tract owned by R R Burlingham stands a school 20 x20 has been occupied as a place of worship. Sometimes by Episcopol Methodist at other times by the Weslyan Methodist hold 150 people"

At home with Reuben and Phoebe in 1851 were the following children, all born in Upper Canada:

  • Elizabeth, 29
  • Roxy, 25
  • Huldah, 20
  • Reuben, 14
  • David, 34
  • Hannah, 27 (David's wife)
  • Sarah Ann, 2 (David and Hannah's daughter)

Reuben died on 27 Nov 1857 in Hallowell, Prince Edward, Ontario, Canada. He was buried in Friends Quaker cemetery.[4]Reuben had dreamed 9 months before his death that he would die on the 2nd day of the 2nd month of the following year. According to the Quaker Published Memorials:[5]

"On the day anticipated, his change took place: his end was peaceful." 73 years 11 mo 27, 1857.
